Center for Design
Open House
The Center for Design is Hampshire College's metal design and fabrication studio. The space was looking to attract new students to broaden and diversify their audience. The goal of this open house was to present different art forms together, and utilize the space in new ways, to introduce the Center to people who had never used it before. The main workshop was transformed into a performance venue showcasing live music by current music students. The event also included a pop up gallery of student work made in the Center for Design, and a demo on electro etching giving attendees an opportunity to use some of the shop materials and make something themselves. Approximately 70 people attended the two hour event.
In addition to organizing this event to get new people introduced to the space, as an active member of the shop community I worked internally to help make the space more accessible so that a wider range of students would feel safe returning to use the shop. This included working with a group of students on a list of changes to be made on multiple levels of shop leadership, and creating a a feedback box and digital form so that students would have an anonymous and less confrontational way to share their shop experiences with management.
